Real Madrid’s teenage playmaker, Franco Mastantuono, has expressed that the criticism he has faced in recent months has only served to strengthen his resolve.

The Argentina international, who joined Los Blancos this summer from River Plate, celebrated his inaugural Champions League goal during Madrid’s commanding 6-1 victory over AS Monaco on Tuesday.

“I don’t see myself as [Lionel Messi] nor as the worst signing Real Madrid has ever made,” stated the 18-year-old Mastantuono to reporters following the match.

“Real Madrid is a highly demanding club where one must consistently strive to perform at their best. I have certainly encountered criticism, which I have not forgotten; it drives me to improve and grow stronger. Today, I felt more at ease and showcased the version of myself that I want Real Madrid to witness. I am content, as I have worked diligently for this moment.”

Mastantuono arrived at the Bernabéu stadium as one of Argentina’s most promising talents, having scored three goals in 20 appearances for Madrid, including 12 as a starter.

“I am focused on reaching my best form, which I know is attainable,” he commented. “Since childhood, people have speculated about my potential. They would either proclaim me the next Messi or label me a disaster, claiming I was the worst signing ever made by Real Madrid.”

In addition, Mastantuono came to the defense of his teammate Jude Bellingham amid speculation regarding the England international’s off-field behavior.

Bellingham, who netted Madrid’s sixth goal on Tuesday, has faced criticism from the Bernabéu crowd in the last two home games.

“Jude is resilient, but some of the comments directed at him are unwarranted,” Mastantuono remarked. “He dedicates his time to training at Valdebebas from 9:30 in the morning until 6 in the evening. It is unjust for people to undermine his character when he works so diligently.”
