The 2025-26 season has proven to be tumultuous for Chelsea, particularly for player Cole Palmer, who has struggled with physical setbacks. His participation has been limited to just 13 appearances across all competitions, during which he has managed to score five goals.

At 23, Palmer plays a vital role in Chelsea’s strategic plans when he is fit, necessitating a cautious approach to his management. This was evident in the decision to omit him from the lineup against Cypriot side Pafos.

Before the match, head coach Liam Rosenior disclosed that Palmer was dealing with a “slight tightness in his thigh.” He expressed optimism about Palmer’s return for the upcoming match against Crystal Palace, stating, “It was precautionary. He felt something minor during the game against Brentford early on, and I commend him for pushing through that. At this stage, I want to avoid risking any players, especially those of his caliber. He has a strong chance of being involved and potentially starting on Sunday, and we will continue to prepare him accordingly.”

While concerns about Palmer’s fitness have eased, similar questions linger regarding club captain Reece James and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who both had to leave the match against Pafos at half-time. Rosenior had to make adjustments, bringing in first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and promising Brazilian talent Estevao. Chelsea secured a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to Moises Caicedo’s goal in the 78th minute.

Regarding Jorgensen’s situation, Rosenior commented, “Unfortunately, Filip picked up an issue, and I am truly disappointed for him as he has shown great promise, both in recent matches and training. I hope he recovers swiftly.”

On the matter of James, Rosenior alleviated fears regarding his fitness, emphasizing the importance of having James available as the team faces a busy schedule. “We are playing Wednesday, Saturday, and I want to ensure Reece is as fit as possible because he is a remarkable player and a leader for our squad.”

Despite not delivering their strongest performance against Pafos, Chelsea managed to secure the win, prompting Rosenior to express his desire for unity among supporters. “I must focus on my responsibilities, which involve winning as many games as possible. I cannot control how people perceive me or the situation. From my perspective, I am excited about the club’s future, particularly given the youth and potential of our squad. With minor adjustments and improvements, I believe this team can achieve significant success. I hope the fans will join us on this journey, but I recognize that I must earn their support. It’s a two-way street.”

Chelsea made the decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day, despite his successful tenure, which included victories in the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. The managerial reins were swiftly handed to Rosenior, who was transitioned from Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, in Ligue 1.

Thus far, Rosenior has overseen four matches across various competitions, achieving three wins, with the only defeat occurring in the Carabao Cup semi-finals against Arsenal, where the team trails just 3-2. The pursuit of further silverware remains a strong objective.
