Potential Midfield Reinforcement for Manchester CityPotential Midfield Reinforcement for Manchester City

Joe Cole has identified a potential vulnerability in Manchester City’s roster that may necessitate Pep Guardiola returning to the transfer market this summer. In comments made to Paddy Power, the former Chelsea and England midfielder expressed concern over Rodri’s sluggish return to form. Since his comeback, the Ballon d’Or winner has struggled to regain his previous dominance, a situation that Cole believes is evident in City’s recent difficulties in the Champions League, indicating a need for midfield reinforcement.

“All the top clubs will be monitoring him this summer. Perhaps Manchester City, with Rodri not appearing to be at full speed since his return, should consider their options,” Cole remarked. His comments follow City’s disappointing defeat to Bodo/Glimt, where the usually formidable Spaniard looked unusually vulnerable.

“They may need additional cover in that position; he [Rodri] seemed lightweight in the match against Bodo/Glimt,” Cole continued. Considering the physical demands of both Premier League and European competitions, relying solely on a recovering Rodri may be a risk Guardiola is not willing to take, thereby creating an opportunity for a new deep-lying playmaker to join the squad.

If City were to seek alternatives, Cole believes they need to look no further than Selhurst Park. Adam Wharton has rapidly risen to prominence since joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers, establishing himself as one of the most composed young midfielders in Europe. His ability to control the tempo and execute precise passes has drawn comparisons to the finest players in the game, making him a natural fit for Guardiola’s possession-oriented style.

“Adam is an exceptional player, a great passer of the ball; he would fit perfectly into Pep’s style of play,” Cole asserted. The England youth international possesses the technical proficiency and tactical intelligence essential for any midfielder operating under the Catalan manager. Unlike a conventional defensive midfielder, Wharton provides the progressive distribution that City requires to dismantle tightly packed defenses, positioning him as a potential long-term successor—or immediate competitor—to Rodri.

Acquiring Wharton would mark a second significant loss for Crystal Palace at the hands of Manchester City in a short span. The notable transfer of Marc Guehi to the Etihad Stadium in January had already deprived the Eagles of their captain and defensive leader. Pursuing Wharton would further destabilize the core of the London club, capitalizing on what Cole fears could become a “mass exodus” from Palace.

Palace has increasingly struggled to retain its most talented players amid interest from the Premier League’s elite. Having already allowed Guehi to bolster City’s defense, the Eagles’ management would likely demand a premium price for their midfield standout. However, City’s financial strength and the appeal of playing under Guardiola, alongside former teammate Guehi, could be compelling factors for Wharton.

While Cole views City as an ideal destination for Wharton, he cautioned that they will not be the only contenders. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Wharton has a significant platform to showcase his talents. A strong performance for the Three Lions in North America could dramatically increase his market value and attract a host of interested clubs.

“If he becomes available, participates in the World Cup, and plays significant minutes, he could have his pick of the top clubs,” Cole predicted. The tournament presents Wharton with an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities at the highest level. Should he capitalize on this chance, Manchester City may find themselves embroiled in a competitive bidding war.
