Bayern Munich’s Champions League victory over Union St. Gilloise on Wednesday evening was not without its challenges. However, the German record champions chose to focus on the positives, as they successfully advanced to the knockout stage despite a lackluster first half, a player dismissal, and an unusual penalty miss from Harry Kane.

The esteemed “Personality of the Year” in German football, Harry Kane, has now missed two penalties this year. Fortunately for him, both misses occurred in the opening round of the DFB Pokal and the latest Champions League match, allowing his Bundesliga penalty record to remain unblemished.

In addition to his penalty miss, Kane contributed significantly to the team’s victory by scoring twice during the match. Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sports, humorously addressed inquiries about Kane’s missed penalty in the mixed zone.

“I think I need to talk him up a bit,” Eberl joked. “Of course, I’m kidding. He can miss on occasion. I believe he was frustrated about it; he aimed for the roof of the net, but unfortunately, he hit the crossbar.

“We are pleased to have Harry on our side, as he typically helps us break the deadlock. He scored from two set pieces—one penalty and one corner—that ultimately decided the game. We know we can depend on him.”

Kane himself addressed the situation in his mixed zone interview, stating, “I will do better next time. We have a busy schedule in February, which makes today’s victory crucial.”
