The potential acquisition of Ethan Horvath would mark a significant step in the overhaul of the New York Red Bulls, following the arrival of USMNT icon Bradley. Although Horvath has yet to compete in Major League Soccer (MLS), he boasts an impressive record of 234 appearances across various European leagues, including stints in Norway and England. Securing his services would provide the club with a reliable goalkeeper, especially after the departure of former starter Carlos Coronel at the end of his contract last winter.

The Athletic was the first to report on New York’s interest in acquiring Horvath. A source has since confirmed to GOAL that discussions are advancing regarding a possible loan or transfer deal.

At 30 years old, Horvath spent the first half of the current English season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 16 appearances in the Championship before returning to Cardiff City in January. Over his career in English football, including time with Cardiff, Sheffield Wednesday, Luton Town, and Nottingham Forest, he has amassed a total of 97 appearances.

Before his time in England, Horvath established a solid reputation in Europe with Club Brugge, where he made 64 appearances and gained invaluable experience in both domestic and continental competitions.

On the international stage, Horvath has earned 10 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team since his senior debut in 2016. His experience adds depth to a Red Bulls squad currently in transition, particularly highlighted by his critical role in helping the team secure their first Nations League title against Mexico in 2021 through his exceptional performance in saving multiple penalty kicks.

The Red Bulls have already bolstered their roster by signing winger Cade Cowell, center back Robert Voloder, and right back Justin Che, while several long-standing team members have departed. Notable exits include Daniel Edelman, Peter Stroud, Sean Nealis, and Coronel, as the New York franchise works to reshape its lineup ahead of the upcoming campaign.
