Mikel Oyarzabal is pleased with Real Sociedad’s resurgence in 2026, noting an improvement in their standings. He attributes the previous struggles to the team not performing at their required level, a situation that led to the dismissal of Sergio. In an interview with Radio MARCA Donostia, Oyarzabal highlights the positive impact of Pellegrino Matarazzo’s appointment as head coach and reassures that he is not overly concerned with further solidifying his legacy at the club.

Oyarzabal celebrates the transformation of the team since the holiday season, stating, “I believe the change has been beneficial; things are going well, and everyone seems to have reconnected with that energy reminiscent of our past successes. We are on the right path, but it is crucial to maintain continuity; otherwise, the progress will be in vain.”

The captain has also reflected on the coaching change. He commented, “When a new coach is introduced mid-season, it creates a spark among all players—those on the field and those on the bench—because there is an opportunity to improve and play better. While changing a coach is the simplest solution compared to replacing 25 players, we must also look inward, as some players have not been performing at their best.”

Discussing Matarazzo, Oyarzabal remarked, “He is a down-to-earth, intelligent individual who possesses a deep understanding of football. His attention to detail is impressive, and I was struck by his stature upon our first meeting. His approach encourages bravery in pressing and maintaining a proactive stance, even without possession.”

Victories against Osasuna and Barcelona have proven vital for the much-needed turnaround. Oyarzabal noted the various circumstances surrounding these matches, including a late equalizer in injury time and a penalty shootout win, stating, “It was a day filled with energy and joy, which I believe set the tone for our subsequent matches.”

Though he faced challenges during the penalty shootouts, Oyarzabal remains unfazed. “I don’t dwell much on the missed penalty. In previous shootouts, I have found that watching them only makes me more anxious, so I prefer to look away.”

Now that the situation has improved, Oyarzabal emphasizes the importance of those who have played less frequently. He highlighted Marrero as an example of perseverance in training and the value of seizing opportunities. “Players like Aihen, Pablo Marín, Goti, and Elustondo deserve recognition for their dedication, even if they haven’t had many chances on the pitch.”

Regarding players sidelined due to injury, Oyarzabal spoke positively about Orri Óskarsson and Yangel Herrera. “I believe Orri will contribute significantly to the club, though his adjustment period has been challenging. He has the potential to capitalize on scoring chances, even if his performance isn’t perfect. Yangel is gradually regaining his rhythm and will be an asset in midfield.”

As noted last week in MARCA, Oyarzabal has already entered the club’s history books with 416 appearances. “I am very happy and never imagined achieving this level of success. It is an honor, and I hope for many more matches. Reaching 599 appearances like Gorriz does not obsess me; I focus on enjoying my time here and will fight until my last day. As for a contract renewal, there is nothing to report; I still have two and a half years left on my deal.”

Oyarzabal affirms that he thoroughly enjoys being a part of Real Sociedad. “I occasionally feel overwhelmed, but fortunately, those days are rare. Spending time with my son in the afternoons helps me disconnect from football and prioritize what truly matters, with football being the most important of the less important things. If I ever find myself on the bench, I would choose to view it positively, recognizing that it allows another player to excel and contribute to the club’s success.”
