Ajax’s Forward Situation: Weghorst’s Potential Transfer Amidst Rising Stars

Despite the disappointing 6-0 defeat against AZ in the KNVB Cup, it can be asserted that Ajax has found a path to improvement, even without Wout Weghorst leading their attack.

Weghorst’s potential departure from Ajax as early as January is becoming a topic of discussion. Currently sidelined by injury, he has opened the door for Kasper Dolberg to firmly establish himself as Ajax’s primary striker. The Danish forward has notably scored crucial goals, including against FK Qarabag in the Champions League last December, as well as against NEC and Go Ahead Eagles. It seems that Dolberg has secured a regular starting position under interim coach Fred Grim.

The situation regarding Weghorst seems increasingly uncertain. There are questions about whether he will even want to sit on the bench for several matches. During Francesco Farioli’s tenure at Johan Cruijff ArenA, where he often opted for Brian Brobbey, Weghorst expressed his feelings: “We discuss these matters, of course. I prefer to play ninety minutes and push myself, as I have done throughout my career. This is a new experience for me, but this is Farioli’s choice and his tactical approach. He has his philosophy, and I have mine.”

Currently, Wout Weghorst is being heavily linked with a transfer to FC Twente. The new technical director of Twente, Erik ten Hag, smiled broadly when asked about the striker in an interview with Hans Kraaij junior: “We will consider all such decisions.”

When asked why he has an affinity for Weghorst, Ten Hag responded: “It relates to our determination, regardless of whether he plays here or not. I brought Wout to Manchester United because of his competitive spirit. He plays with such passion… Wout has crafted a remarkable career and has been incredibly successful. He has worked tirelessly and strategically for everything he has achieved.”

Kraaij seemed convinced: “I foresee a year-long relationship between you and Wout here.” However, it remains to be seen whether Twente is prepared to invest the necessary amount to secure the number nine.
