Ajax Pursues New Midfielder Amidst Challenges

Ajax is currently searching for a new midfielder, specifically a defensive option. One of the candidates that emerged was Edson Álvarez. However, it appears that acquiring the Mexican international is proving to be a challenging endeavor for the Amsterdam club.

Fenerbahçe, the Turkish club that has Álvarez on loan from West Ham United, is not prepared to part ways with him this month. According to Devin Öztek, the director of Fenerbahçe, there is considerable interest from various clubs in Álvarez. He stated, “I can be very clear: Edson is a crucial player for us, both on and off the field. He is fully focused on the team and will not be leaving.”

The financial aspect of Álvarez’s contract also complicates matters for Ajax. If Marijn Beuker intends to bring him to the Johan Cruijff ArenA, he would need to present a substantial financial offer. Álvarez earns an annual salary of €6.4 million at West Ham United. If Ajax were to cover this salary, they would face a cost of approximately €3.2 million for just a six-month loan period.
