Before the dismissal of Amorim at Manchester United in early January, Kobbie Mainoo found it difficult to secure playing time at the club. Despite the Portuguese manager’s reluctance to see Mainoo leave, he made it clear that the young midfielder was not his first choice in the lineup. Nonetheless, Amorim acknowledged Mainoo’s potential, labeling him as the “future” of the club.

Upon Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager, he immediately fielded Mainoo, leading to a notable 2-0 victory against Manchester City last weekend. Carrick has since expressed his admiration for the England youth international.

In a recent press conference, Carrick shared his longstanding relationship with Mainoo, which spans over five years. He emphasized the importance of academy players like Mainoo transitioning successfully to the first team, while also praising his remarkable talents.

Carrick remarked, “I truly enjoyed working with Kobbie. I have known him since he was about 13 or 14 years old while I was completing my coaching badges. This club needs young talent to come through and understand the significance of their roles—not just for themselves, but for the club and its supporters. It’s vital that we harness this and build upon it. Kobbie exemplifies this, having had a rapid rise and making significant contributions in crucial matches, which speaks volumes about his character and ability to handle pressure. Every career has its ups and downs, and trajectories can vary, but last week’s performance showcased what he can deliver. It was fantastic to see him enjoying the game.”

After their impressive win against City, Manchester United now faces an even greater challenge this Sunday against Premier League leaders Arsenal. Carrick recognizes the formidable task ahead but is eager for the competition against Mikel Arteta’s squad.

He stated, “I am looking forward to the game. It’s a significant challenge. Arsenal is a very good team with numerous strengths. They are where they are in the league for a reason, and we are fully aware of that. However, we feel prepared and are approaching the match with positive energy and enthusiasm, even knowing it won’t be easy.”

Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, United’s next two matches against Arsenal and Fulham could be pivotal in their quest for a top-four finish. Carrick added, “We have a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished and the steps required to get there. Arsenal deserves credit for their strong squad and recruitment efforts, and Mikel deserves recognition for his excellent management. We also have our plans on how to achieve our goals, and that is what we are diligently working towards.”
