Following draws against Chelsea and Everton, Manchester City appeared to be regaining form with a decisive 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the FA Cup and a commanding 2-0 win against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg. However, a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League, coupled with a distressing 3-1 loss to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League, has brought the team back down to reality.

City’s struggles can be attributed to the absence of several key players, including Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Dias, and Matheus Nunes. After the midweek loss in Norway, Guardiola acknowledged these challenges, stating that his team appeared somewhat “fragile.” He remarked to BBC Match of the Day, “We arrived in certain areas without important players who provide consistency. They seem a bit more fragile than last season during specific periods. However, I commend their effort while down a player, with many stepping up. We must quickly change the dynamic before our upcoming matches against Wolves and Galatasaray. We hope to see players return gradually.

“We need to regain the feeling that our results since 2025 have not met expectations in the Premier League and today, but we look forward to the challenges against Wolves and Galatasaray. Today presented a significant opportunity for us, and despite feeling like things are going wrong, we must strive to alter that trajectory. For much of the match today, we lacked vigor.”

Currently, City finds themselves seven points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, while still contending in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League. Despite the absence of key players, Guardiola underscored the importance of remaining calm and allowing time for City to regain their form.

He communicated to reporters, “I understand the reasons for our current struggles—100 percent I know what’s happening with the team. Let’s allow more time. Will it be sufficient? I can’t say. I’m aware of how we can overcome this fragility, and the players are aware too. This issue is not limited to one player. I know the solution to eliminate the fragility. We need to shift the dynamic and secure victories in our upcoming matches; if we do not finish eighth, we will face more games in February.”

Under Guardiola’s leadership, Manchester City has amassed numerous trophies, including the Champions League and four consecutive Premier League titles. This success has set a high standard, leading to the perception that City is scrutinized more rigorously than other clubs. Guardiola noted, “I understand it’s seen as a catastrophe having 13 points in the Champions League; however, eight teams have the same point total, one of which is among the best globally, Paris Saint-Germain. This situation is acceptable for them, but for us, it’s catastrophic. The standards are incredibly high; we cannot afford to lose. Manchester City is held to such perfection that losing is unacceptable.”

In the past three seasons, City has narrowly claimed the Premier League title from Arsenal. This season, Mikel Arteta’s squad appears poised to reclaim the top spot and aim for their first championship since 2004. Nevertheless, Guardiola remains confident that his team will keep pace with the Gunners, who fell short to Liverpool in the league last season.

He concluded, “Arsenal is currently the best team in the world. We hope to improve continually and give ourselves a chance to catch up with them.”

Next on City’s agenda is a home match against Premier League bottom-dwellers Wolves, while Arsenal will face Manchester United.
