Manchester United progressed to the next round of the competition after a dramatic extra time victory over Derby County, following a goalless draw in regular time at Old Trafford.

The breakthrough came shortly before the end of the first half of extra time when Derby defender Luca Crolla inadvertently diverted James Overy’s ball into his own net, giving United the lead. Just two minutes later, Chido Obi effectively sealed the victory for his team with a second goal. Although Max Nessling struck in the 113th minute to create a tense finish, United managed to maintain their lead, setting up a last-16 matchup against Oxford.

A highlight of the evening was the introduction of 16-year-old Kai Rooney, who received enthusiastic chants of ‘Rooney! Rooney!’ from the crowd. His performance off the bench garnered attention, with his father Wayne and mother Coleen watching proudly from the directors’ box. Wayne Rooney took to social media platform X to express his pride in Kai’s debut, sharing a nostalgic image of them walking together at Old Trafford and another of Kai in action against Derby, captioned: “Then and now. Proud of you Kai.”

This occasion marked a rare opportunity for Wayne to witness his son play live, as Coleen previously shared that he had often refrained from attending Kai’s early matches to avoid placing additional pressure on him. She recounted, “How do you say to all of these kids: ‘Go away, I’m watching my son?’ It was simpler to let Kai play without distractions.”

Wayne Rooney joined Manchester United from Everton in 2004, spending 13 successful years at the club before returning to Goodison Park in 2017. As United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals, Rooney’s legacy includes five Premier League titles, one Champions League title, one Europa League title, and one FA Cup. He undoubtedly hopes that Kai can follow in his remarkable footsteps with the club.

The match also attracted several notable figures from within Manchester United, including director of football Jason Wilcox, recruitment director Christopher Vivell, and academy director Stephen Torpey, who were all in attendance as United’s U18s triumphed over Derby.

United’s head coach, Michael Carrick, was also present to observe the youth team’s performance ahead of the upcoming match against Arsenal. Recently appointed as head coach after Ruben Amorim’s departure, Carrick made a winning return to the dugout, leading his team to a 2-0 victory against Manchester City last weekend.

As United prepares to face Arsenal, currently leading the Premier League table by seven points despite two consecutive draws in recent games, Carrick will undoubtedly aim to capitalize on the momentum from their recent successes.
