However, the HIP rule is not without controversy. The NWSLPA is actively pursuing its immediate rescission, contending that both the rule and its implementation contravene the Collective Bargaining Agreement and federal labor law.

Amid ongoing legal considerations, Rodman’s contract was ultimately solidified. For the NWSL, this development transcends mere contractual significance. When asked about the HIP rule’s influence on her lineup decisions during the Unfiltered podcast, USWNT head coach Emma Hayes was forthright in her response. “The first thing I would say to the players is, look, that’s not my call. That’s been designed by somebody else, and you have to take that up with someone else… My job is to pick the very best team for the U.S. Women’s National Team, regardless of status, contracts, or wherever you are.”

The Washington Spirit have consistently performed well, appearing in consecutive NWSL championship games under the ownership of Michele Kang and supported by an enthusiastic fan base at Audi Field. Now, with Rodman committed for three more years, the Spirit solidify their position as not just a contender but as a model franchise within the NWSL. Questions linger regarding whether an overseas contract would have been more lucrative, and her agent, Mike Senkowski, acknowledged the necessity of exploring options outside the NWSL to secure fair market value. “We worked really hard to put together an agreement that we felt complied with the CBA and would keep Trinity in the league for the foreseeable future. With no certain way to get her fair market value within the NWSL, naturally, that forces you and encourages you to look elsewhere.”

Despite receiving multiple offers from clubs in England, none of which were constrained by a salary cap, Rodman prioritized achieving the status of the highest-paid female soccer player globally—a distinction she has now attained.

“Trinity is an inspiration to young girls across America. She is a player they can relate to, and those young fans matter more than anything to her,” Senkowski remarked.

“The decision to continue to play here represents a very clear vision for the future of women’s soccer. She set a new standard for the sport and will ultimately drive the continued growth and success of the league and its players. I’m so proud of her.”
