Inter Miami, fresh off their monumental victory in the MLS Cup in 2025, is actively preparing for a new season in North America. The team is set to compete on various fronts, with speculation regarding a potential special invitation to the Copa Libertadores still circulating.

Currently, under the guidance of head coach Javier Mascherano, the squad is focused on regaining match fitness and sharpness after experiencing the retirement of former Barcelona stars Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

In their opening match of the new year, Inter Miami faced an unexpected 3-0 loss against Peruvian opponents, revealing some rustiness in their performance. Nevertheless, Lionel Messi’s presence was warmly welcomed by both fans and players alike.

Cantero, a player from the opposing team, expressed his elation after securing Messi’s jersey, stating, “Leo is my idol. He has inspired me since childhood, so it’s an honor to have asked for his shirt. It’s going in a frame at home.” Overcome with emotion, he added, “It’s a dream come true to have shared the field with him. His humility and willingness to support young players are truly remarkable.”

Messi, known for graciously sharing his jersey, has become a coveted prize for many players. Santiago Sosa, who faced the Argentine superstar while playing for Atlanta United in September 2023, shared his experience, saying, “When I received Messi’s shirt, it felt like a trophy—not just for me, but for my family as well. It’s a memory I will cherish forever.”

In February 2025, after a CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Sporting KC, it was reported that Mexican referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nara requested Messi’s jersey. The Argentine legend scored his first competitive goal of the year during this match, which was played in harsh weather conditions. To avoid any on-field controversy, Nara received the jersey in the dressing room post-match.

Inter Miami faced a setback against Alianza Lima, conceding two goals to 42-year-old Paolo Guerrero within the first half. Luis Ramos added a third goal in the 72nd minute, while Messi and Luis Suarez, both of whom have committed to new contracts with the team, were unable to find the net.

As Inter Miami prepares to move into their new home at Freedom Park, there will be additional opportunities for players eager to trade jerseys with Messi in the coming weeks. The team is slated to embark on a four-game Champions Tour of South America, facing Atlético Nacional in Colombia on January 31, Barcelona de Guayaquil in Ecuador on February 7, and concluding with a match against Ecuadorean Serie A title holders Independiente del Valle on February 13.
