West Ham United revitalized their efforts to avoid relegation with a convincing victory against Sunderland, just a week after their dramatic win at Tottenham. This latest success brought them within two points of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, a significant turnaround for a team that seemed in dire straits only days prior.

Following the match, West Ham’s manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, expressed his admiration for the players’ performance. The team surged to a 3-0 lead before conceding a late goal. In an interview with BBC Match of the Day, he stated, “We played well; I am always optimistic about areas for improvement. Clearly, the players are beginning to connect and understand each other’s movements better. What we have been practicing on the training ground is starting to manifest on the pitch, which is a source of joy for me. The mental aspect is crucial. We must maintain our momentum; building on our recent victory was important. The team displayed excellent energy in the first half. We improved our game management and tempo in the second half, knowing Sunderland would respond. We defended well, controlled the game time, and maintained offensive threats. Overall, it was a solid performance. The fans reciprocated our efforts with their support and, I believe, they left happy today.”

In the latter stages of the match, tensions escalated when a Sunderland player, Granit Xhaka, reportedly clapped back at taunts from West Ham supporters. Sunderland’s manager, Regis Le Bris, expressed uncertainty about the incident but acknowledged it was unfortunate. One West Ham fan recounted: “Another individual approached the dugout to calm things down when Xhaka began to engage with him. He was merely asking Xhaka to stop, but Xhaka responded aggressively, saying, ‘I’ll see you outside.’ Even as he left the field, he continued to confront the supporter. It was entirely Xhaka’s fault; he was reacting poorly and getting riled up by fans. It was unbecoming for someone of his stature.”

While West Ham celebrated their home victory, Nuno acknowledged that Xhaka’s absence due to an ankle injury played to their advantage. “Xhaka is a key player for Sunderland; his absence favored us. However, this does not diminish the quality of their squad, which is evident in their style of play and current standing. Tomas Soucek and Mateus Fernandes worked exceptionally hard for us during the match.”

Le Bris did not shy away from admitting the shortcomings of his team, stating, “West Ham were the superior side today. They exhibited more quality, aggression, and composure. We struggled to match their intensity, especially at the start, which allowed them to score first. Our response in the second half improved slightly; we managed to score and had another opportunity, but they were simply the better team. We must accept this outcome.”

Regarding Xhaka’s injury, he added, “It’s an ankle injury, and we will monitor his recovery and determine the necessary rest period.”

Looking ahead, West Ham aims to secure a third consecutive win against London rivals Chelsea next Saturday, while Sunderland, currently sitting in 10th place, will host Burnley, another team battling relegation, on February 2.
