Celta Faces Defeat After Long Unbeaten StreakCelta Faces Defeat After Long Unbeaten Streak

Celta Vigo has faced its first away defeat since September 28, when they lost to Elche, marking a gap of 119 days without a loss on the road. During this period, the team achieved five victories and one draw in league matches, demonstrating their strength away from Balaídos. Notably, they had also secured wins in all their matches in 2026 until now.

The defeat came against Real Sociedad, where Celta was unable to capitalize on playing with a numerical advantage for several minutes. Borja Iglesias managed to equalize the score, marking his eighth goal of the league season and twelfth across all competitions.

Reflecting on the match, Iglesias stated, “It was an exciting game with both teams striving for victory; they emerged victorious, and we congratulate them. Just three days prior, we also won despite being one player down from the 30th minute. Football today is very competitive, and it was challenging to play on a field that was quite slippery. We should appreciate what we’ve accomplished; we’ve come off an impressive run, and while today wasn’t our best performance, these moments foster growth and reinforce our confidence in this talented group.”

Coach Claudio Giráldez sought to invigorate his squad by making up to seven changes following their match against Lille. Only four players—Radu, Starfelt, Marcos Alonso, and Hugo Sotelo—retained their spots in the starting lineup. The team is now looking ahead to their next fixture in Belgrade while keeping their focus on the upcoming league match against Getafe this Sunday.
