Jordi Cruijff’s Upcoming Role as Ajax’s Technical Director: Insights and Concerns

Former footballer Wim Kieft notes a significant advantage for Cruijff: he cannot perform worse than his predecessors. However, Kieft also expresses some concerns, particularly because Cruijff has yet to prove himself in such a position.

In his column for De Telegraaf, Kieft emphasizes that this is an opportune moment for Cruijff to step into his new role in Amsterdam. “At Ajax, it is always the same story: things either go incredibly well or they fail spectacularly. With this in mind, it is an ideal time for new technical director Jordi Cruijff to join Ajax. He cannot possibly do worse than his predecessors, such as Gerry Hamstra, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Sven Mislintat, and Alex Kroes, in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.”

Kieft points out that Ajax, like Feyenoord, often encounters significant issues, resulting in substantial financial losses. “With a bit of common sense, Cruijff cannot perform worse than the previous leadership at Ajax. Additionally, a new generation of youth players is emerging, showing promise in revitalizing Ajax’s identity.”

Despite these optimistic notes, Kieft articulates his concerns regarding Cruijff’s past performances at other clubs. “He has held various roles in football, where his surname has likely played a part in his opportunities. This name brings hope and sets expectations. However, Cruijff has yet to demonstrate his prowess as a top technical director in any of his previous roles.”

Currently, Ajax is actively engaged in the transfer market; however, journalist Maarten Wijffels reports that the incoming technical director has not yet been involved in the day-to-day operations. “Jordi Cruijff is not yet involved in Ajax’s daily affairs,” assures Wijffels from Algemeen Dagblad. While his name frequently surfaces in connection with transfer targets, this association may be unfounded.
