Mateta’s Transfer Saga: Nottingham Forest Enters the Race

omidbasir- Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future has taken a new turn as Nottingham Forest has entered the competition for the Crystal Palace forward. According to a report from The Athletic, Forest, managed by Sean Dyche, has made an offer of £35 million for the 28-year-old. Personal terms are reportedly not expected to be a problem. However, the report indicates that Crystal Palace, under manager Oliver Glasner, will only consider a sale for £40 million, provided they can secure a replacement before the transfer window closes.

Crystal Palace is reportedly interested in acquiring Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. In light of the team’s recent defeat to Chelsea, Glasner shared his thoughts on Mateta’s situation, stating, “It is pretty clear. JP will stay if we don’t have the right replacement who can play immediately.”

The departure of Marc Guehi to Manchester City this winter has already left a significant gap in the squad, and Glasner has confirmed his intention to leave at the end of the season. Losing Mateta would represent yet another setback for the club, especially as the forward has voiced frustration over unmet promises regarding player recruitment and a potential new contract.

A transfer to Nottingham Forest would be surprising, given that both clubs are currently fighting against relegation, with only three points separating them in the league standings. Additionally, their relationship has been strained since last season when Palace was relegated from the Europa League, allowing Forest to take their place. Palace even reached out to UEFA to express concerns regarding the ownership structure of their club.

Sean Dyche has acknowledged that Nottingham Forest is actively working on transfers, aiming to strengthen the squad. He remarked, “I think it’s quite apparent. The club are working hard. It’s not like they don’t know the situation, and they are making efforts to address it. They are willing to trade and have provided financial backing to the club.”

Forest has already secured Lorenzo Lucca on loan from Napoli but clearly aims to execute additional business before the window closes.

As the transfer deadline approaches, Mateta finds himself anxiously awaiting the outcome of potential negotiations with Nottingham Forest. With eight goals in the Premier League this season, his absence would be keenly felt. Glasner’s squad is set to face Nottingham Forest again on Sunday at Selhurst Park.
