Despite making a fair impression this season, Bouwman has been prone to errors on the field. Pastoor took it a step further, stating, “I do not enjoy watching a defender who cannot defend.” He acknowledged that Bouwman has potential but suggested that there are significant areas for improvement.

Aad de Mos has also been critical of Bouwman’s performance. Earlier this month, he commented in De Telegraaf, “With his passing, Bouwman is a true Ajax player, but defensively, he has not mastered his responsibilities.” De Mos specifically referenced a misjudgment against Villarreal, saying, “When a high ball comes and the situation becomes challenging, one must avoid taking risks—hold onto the attacker to ensure they do not gain possession.
