For the fourth time since Carlo Ancelotti assumed the role of head coach for the Brazil national team last summer, legendary forward Neymar has been omitted from the Selecao squad for the upcoming international friendlies this month. Neymar has not played for Brazil since October 2023, when he suffered a rupture of knee ligaments during a match against Uruguay. After spending 12 months recovering from this significant injury, he now finds himself two years into an international hiatus. Since Ancelotti took charge of the South American heavyweights, Neymar’s selection has been hindered by persistent fitness issues. His last appearance for the national team came in March 2025, which ended in his withdrawal due to injury. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has faced ongoing challenges in maintaining his fitness. In response to inquiries regarding Neymar’s absence, Ancelotti stated to PLACAR: “Yes, yes (laughs), [the question I’ve heard most so far is] about Neymar, but it’s normal because he’s a legend of Brazilian football. I understand the public’s desire to see Neymar return to his best physical condition, and the CBF, along with the national team’s coaching staff, shares this hope. Today’s football demands not just talent, but also physical fitness and intensity. We hope Neymar can reach his optimal level. “I believe he would be more effective playing centrally rather than as a winger. Modern wingers are expected to contribute defensively, whereas a more central position requires less defensive responsibility. Additionally, a talented player positioned closer to the goal has more opportunities to score. The ‘False 9’ role could be his ideal position.” Neymar, who returned to his boyhood club Santos in January, is approaching the end of his contract, and the club is uncertain about offering him an extension. Club president Teixeira commented on Neymar’s renewal process: “The Neymar project isn’t for six months or a year; it’s aimed at the 2026 World Cup. Santos is aware of how to manage Neymar’s situation, given the substantial investment involved. Both parties will assess the financial aspects periodically throughout the year. Neymar is not preoccupied with financial concerns, but Santos has its limits. The project revolves around the 2026 World Cup, and if we can find common ground, his continuation can be assured. I believe this situation will be resolved at the appropriate time.” Brazilian fans are eagerly awaiting Neymar’s return to the national colors as the 2026 World Cup approaches. The former stars of Barcelona and PSG now have only the March international window to demonstrate his fitness and form to Ancelotti in a bid for a World Cup spot next summer in North America. In the meantime, the 33-year-old must remain fit and perform consistently for Santos to secure a call-up for the March friendlies. Ancelotti’s Brazil is set to compete against Senegal and Tunisia in back-to-back friendlies on November 15 and 18, respectively.
