Aston Villa has reached an agreement to re-sign former midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan from Nottingham Forest.

The 27-year-old, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, is set to depart the City Ground before the transfer deadline on Monday to return to Villa.

Chelsea expressed interest in the Brazilian international; however, sources informed BBC Sport that Luiz preferred a move back to Villa, where he made 204 appearances from 2019 to 2024. The loan agreement includes an option to buy.

Aston Villa sold Luiz to Juventus for £42.5 million in June 2024, a move aimed at addressing their profit and sustainability challenges. Despite this, Luiz made only three Serie A starts before joining Nottingham Forest in August 2025.

Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, is seeking to strengthen his midfield options, particularly with captain John McGinn facing a two-month absence due to a knee injury and Boubacar Kamara expected to miss the remainder of the season with a knee issue.

Earlier this month, Villa missed out on Conor Gallagher, who chose to join Tottenham from Atletico Madrid for £35 million.

Currently, Villa sits in third place in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal, and has qualified for the Europa League last 16 with one league-phase game remaining.

In addition, Villa is anticipated to finalize the £18 million signing of striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas shortly, following the striker’s medical examination in the UK. The Turkish club activated an £11.2 million buy option for Abraham from Roma on Monday and is now poised to transfer the 28-year-old to Villa.
