omidbasir- River Plate has officially announced an ambitious expansion of the Monumental Stadium, raising its capacity to 101,000 spectators. This significant enhancement will position the stadium among the largest soccer venues globally.

“Today marks a historic milestone,” stated River Plate President Stefano Di Carlo in a video shared on Instagram. He elaborated that the project includes the installation of a roof over the stands, adding further comfort and protection for fans.

The renovations at Monumental, the regular home ground for the Argentina national team, will make it the second-largest soccer club stadium in the world, surpassed only by Barcelona’s Nou Camp, which is projected to accommodate 105,000 fans upon completion.

The expansion will introduce 16,000 additional seats, increasing the current capacity of 85,000. The total estimated cost for this undertaking is expected to exceed $100 million, with construction slated to commence in April of this year, aiming for completion within approximately 36 months.

River Plate is collaborating with the renowned German engineering firm, Schlaich Bergermann Partner (SBP), known for their expertise in large stadium roofs and for their involvement in iconic projects such as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Allianz Arena, Maracanã, and Santiago Bernabéu, among others. The club has expressed optimism that renovations will be completed in time for Argentina’s co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup.

Funding for the project will be secured through long-term international loans with competitive interest rates, as noted by Di Carlo. The club plans to service this debt using increased revenue generated from hosting sports events and musical concerts in the renovated stadium.

“River Plate is committed to modernization, growth, and maintaining its historic leadership in sports infrastructure, solidifying the stadium’s status as the largest and most significant in the Americas and a global benchmark,” Di Carlo concluded.
