Gavin Cowan, who previously managed AFC Telford, has been appointed as the new head coach of Shrewsbury Town, taking over from Michael Appleton at the League Two club.

Cowan, a former defender for the Shrews, made 30 appearances between March 2005 and January 2007. At 44 years old, he has been with Brackley Town since May 2023, leading them to a successful campaign where they won the National League North title and secured promotion to the fifth tier for the 2024-25 season.

His coaching staff will include former Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Dave Edwards, along with Jamie Haynes, who served as Cowan’s assistant at Brackley.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Cowan stated, “It’s an honour and a privilege to be Shrewsbury Town’s head coach. The last few days have been a whirlwind, but I’m incredibly excited about the challenge ahead and the opportunity to represent this special football club once again.”

Shrewsbury Town parted ways with Appleton on Wednesday, with the club currently positioned just two points above the relegation zone in League Two, following a disappointing run of one win in their last eleven matches. The club has confirmed that a “compensation package” was agreed upon with Brackley to facilitate Cowan’s appointment.

Cowan’s first match in charge will take place this Saturday, where he will face Barnet at home.
