omidbasir- Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin dedicated his remarkable Champions League performance against Real Madrid to his fellow Ukrainians.

The Ukraine international scored a dramatic header in the 98th minute, securing a 4-2 victory that enabled Benfica to qualify for the Champions League playoffs based on goal difference.

Trubin, who joined Benfica in August 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk, made this poignant tribute 18 months after the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In a heartfelt message after the match, he stated: “For Ukraine. For those who know how to fight till the end.”

At just 24 years old, Trubin received the match ball signed by his teammates, symbolizing their collective achievement.

Reflecting on his journey, he recalled his Champions League debut, which took place on October 2020 against Real Madrid, stating, “More than five years ago – my Champions League debut. Against Real Madrid. Football has a sense of timing.”

Under the guidance of coach José Mourinho, Benfica advanced to the knockout stage, finishing with a vital goal difference of one, surpassing both Marseille and Pafos.

Benfica and Real Madrid will be included in the upcoming qualifying playoffs draw on Friday for teams ranked ninth through 24th. Benfica concluded the group stage in 24th place, accumulating nine points from eight matches.
