Speculation Surrounds Ajax’s Next Coach Following Heitinga Departure

The departure of John Heitinga from Ajax has sparked considerable speculation about possible successors. Erik ten Hag is being widely discussed as the frontrunner, alongside other candidates such as Alex Pastoor and Frank de Boer. However, during the SBS 6 program ‘Nieuws van de Dag,’ a surprising name emerged: Sarina Wiegman.

Reporter Noa Vahle elaborated on why Ten Hag is perceived as the top choice for Ajax. “He is the most logical candidate. He knows the club well, and I believe he could extract more from the current squad than John Heitinga could. However, I do not think he can lead them to a championship, nor a top-two or top-three finish.”

Vahle also hinted that Mark van Bommel might be a less favorable option, as he is closely associated with PSV, which could create sensitivity around his appointment. Tafelgast Ronald Molendijk then proposed the unexpected option of Sarina Wiegman, citing her successful track record wherever she has coached. Yet, Vahle promptly dismissed this suggestion. “No, I’m sorry. I’m very much looking forward to 2025, but let’s be clear: women’s football and men’s football are truly two different worlds. I don’t mean to imply that a woman can’t take on this role, but she is not suited for it.”
