Paqueta s Heartfelt Return to Flamengo Amidst West Ham ChallengesPaqueta s Heartfelt Return to Flamengo Amidst West Ham Challenges

omidbasir- Earlier this season, Lucas Paqueta was linked to a transfer to Flamengo, but the move did not materialize. In November, the 28-year-old disclosed his strong desire to return to Brazil, particularly after being exonerated from spot-fixing charges following an extensive investigation.

Paqueta shared: “The initial contact from Flamengo occurred when Marcos Braz was still vice president. I am aware of Flamengo’s aspirations, and they understand my passion for the club, which makes this a recurring topic. When I was accused and the trial process was about to commence, Braz visited my home to discuss the offer. I have always wanted to return to Flamengo, yet at that moment, I was uncertain about my decision. I also spoke with the West Ham director, stating: ‘Braz, I want to go back. I believe I would thrive at Flamengo, but I cannot disregard the support I have received from West Ham. They have been there for me through various situations, treating my family and me with respect. I needed to allow them to handle the situation.’ This dialogue with Flamengo did occur.”

This week, West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo both praised and critiqued Paqueta’s handling of his transfer. The former Wolves manager described the Brazilian as a “unique” talent but noted that the transition was not executed as smoothly as it could have been.

He remarked to reporters: “For me, Lucas is a special player and a remarkable individual. He is a number 10, as I’ve mentioned numerous times. However, regarding his departure, it was not handled in the best manner. Circumstances have led to his desire to return to Brazil, and he has received an offer. We await the medical examination, but it is essential to recognize that he is a unique player with exceptional qualities, and replacing him is not feasible. We must move forward with what we have.”

When Paqueta finally finalized his transfer after weeks of speculation, he could hardly contain his joy. He expressed that he might need Flamengo more than they needed him.

In an interview with Flamengo TV, he stated: “Perhaps Flamengo didn’t need me, but I needed Flamengo. I am overjoyed and feel deeply connected to the club and its fans. My heart is red-black, and I promise that will not change. I am thrilled to be back home and look forward to bringing joy to our Nation and giving my best.”

Looking ahead, West Ham faces the challenge of competing in the Premier League without one of their key players, Paqueta. Currently sitting 18th in the table and five points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, the Hammers have managed to secure victories in their last two league matches. Their next challenge awaits as they travel to face London rivals Chelsea this Saturday.
