Pochettino Prepares USMNT for World Cup Contention

omidbasir- The World Cup may not commence until June, but for Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) coach, March is a pivotal month in the lead-up to the tournament. During this period, the U.S. will face Portugal and Belgium in their final friendlies before roster decisions become critical.

“March presents a significant opportunity. I wouldn’t say it defines our path, but it is crucial for the players to understand that the World Cup is approaching,” Pochettino remarked. “Our intention is for the World Cup preparations to begin in March, as we come together to solidify our identity, playing style, and performance expectations.

“This is more than just a series of four friendly matches; it’s akin to four World Cup games,” he continued. “It is vital for players to grasp the necessity of showcasing their skills and quality, ensuring we compete at our highest level during the World Cup.”

The March training camp thus holds greater significance, serving as a last chance for players to position themselves for World Cup selection in front of Pochettino.

Ricardo Pepi is expected to recover from an arm injury in time, while Tyler Adams and Cameron Carter-Vickers have been sidelined with leg injuries. Weston McKennie, who made only four appearances for the USMNT in 2025—his lowest since 2017—was omitted from the November squad due to a managerial change at Juventus. It was deemed more crucial for McKennie to earn his place in the team and establish a solid foundation for the winter.

Pochettino has been impressed with McKennie’s recent performances, particularly his consistent form, highlighted by a three-game scoring streak in the Champions League that helped Juventus advance.

“In November, there were many changes at his club, so it’s encouraging that he is now playing regularly and consistently,” Pochettino noted. “Assessing player performance is essential for determining how to blend the team for the World Cup.”

January signifies the transfer season, which tends to slow down in a World Cup year, yet several USMNT players are linked with moves. Pochettino is closely monitoring the situation, stating that transfers are ultimately a player-by-player decision influenced by personal circumstances and career aspirations.

He shared an example of Alex Freeman, who consulted Pochettino before moving to Villarreal, seeking advice on the timing of such a transfer close to the World Cup.

“I advised him to remain natural and pursue what he feels is best for him and his family, supported by his advisors,” Pochettino said. “As coaches, we prioritize the well-being and confidence of our players. I’m not concerned about potential transfers as I expect positive outcomes. It is important for players to feel happy and comfortable, while also maintaining focus on performance and the World Cup.”

Currently, MLS players face challenges as they prepare for the upcoming season while European players are entrenched in regular match schedules. This disparity can make it difficult for MLS players to demonstrate their form and fitness before final roster decisions are made.

Pochettino recognizes the complexities of this situation but remains committed to his non-negotiables regarding player selection. “When players arrive from different backgrounds and leagues, the key is to establish a shared understanding of our values—respect, discipline, and teamwork,” he emphasized. “In previous camps, integrating players from diverse leagues has been complex. However, we are clear on our expectations to build a successful team culture.”

Since Pochettino’s appointment, every action he has taken has been strategically aligned with World Cup readiness. The previous year was filled with challenges, but each decision was influenced by the overarching goal of preparing the team for significant moments ahead.
