Matarazzo Prepares for Critical Derby against Athletic ClubMatarazzo Prepares for Critical Derby against Athletic Club

Pellegrino Matarazzo recognizes the importance of the upcoming derby on Sunday for Real Sociedad’s supporters. He is confident that his players will give their all to secure a victory and continue their positive momentum since his appointment as head coach.

In a recent press conference, Matarazzo addressed the fitness status of Barrenetxea, who missed training due to a thigh contusion sustained last week, and Marrero, who suffered an injury yesterday. He stated, “Barrenetxea has not trained today due to the bruising he experienced last Sunday, which has caused issues this week. However, we are hopeful he can train tomorrow and be an option for Sunday’s match. Regarding Unai, he underwent surgery today and will be sidelined for about seven days before beginning training again, initially with a protective mask. His return will depend on when he feels comfortable playing with it.”

Another player mentioned was Yangel Herrera, who may be close to returning. Matarazzo noted, “He is training very well. While it is still too early for him to start, there is a strong possibility he will be included in the squad, albeit for a limited time, as it is essential to build the player’s fitness. We are on the right track, and I am optimistic about him being part of the lineup on Sunday.”

When asked about the potential dilemma of selecting the midfield duo, especially with Gorrotxategi’s impressive performance against Celta and Soler’s return, Matarazzo replied, “I don’t see it as a dilemma, but rather as having more options. It’s a tough decision to make. If three players are performing well in midfield, I can make decisions based on their profiles. Additionally, we have five matches in two weeks, so decisions will be made accordingly.”

Recently honored as the LaLiga Coach of the Month for January, Matarazzo expressed humility regarding the accolade. “While I appreciate the recognition, I believe it reflects our collective effort. I am the coach, but this is a product of the players’ hard work, the staff, and the unwavering support from our fans at home matches. It could be termed as the team of the month rather than just the coach of the month. I am proud to lead and, as I say, I smile and move forward.”

The New Jersey-born coach is acutely aware of the derby’s significance for the txuriurdin fans, recounting his experience at San Mamés during a recent Champions League match. “Yes, I felt the atmosphere while walking through the streets after our last victory. Fans have told me how critical Sunday’s match is, not just for them but for us—players and coaches alike. I attended the match at San Mamés to observe our opponents and gauge the atmosphere we will face.”

Matarazzo highlighted the positive rapport between the rival supporters, contrasting it with some derbies he has experienced in Germany. “Having spent 25 years in Germany, I have witnessed many intense derbies. However, this one is special because the fans coexist amicably, which is not typical. Their interaction reflects the respect between the two clubs. Everyone wants to win, and we will do everything possible to achieve that.”

He also commented on Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club, noting, “They play with high pressure, have a solid defensive structure, and are direct in their approach, whether through the center or the wings, with numerous crosses into the area. We need to make intelligent decisions and utilize our strengths at the right moments. We must remain connected and prepared for an adverse atmosphere.”

Real Sociedad enters the match in better form than Athletic Club, yet Matarazzo understands that form can be irrelevant in derbies. “We recognize this match as a competition in itself, starting from scratch. The Athletic coach mentioned it is their Champions League match… There are no favorites in this encounter; it is the team that makes smarter decisions, wins individual battles, shows character, and displays their qualities that will prevail. Understanding the flow of the match will be crucial. Do I envision what it would mean to win? We must wish for these things; otherwise, they won’t happen. We know we are in a good moment, and we will do everything possible to win; we absolutely believe we can achieve it.”

In closing, Matarazzo downplayed the importance of Athletic’s injuries and uncertainties. “Of course, we pay attention to who trains and who doesn’t, but I believe they will field their best possible eleven, taking any necessary risks. I don’t think it will change their approach to the match; only minor details might vary, as anyone on the field will be 100% motivated.”
