omidbasir- Inter Miami CF has officially signed Mexican national team forward Germán Berterame from Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey, as announced by the club on Friday.

Berterame joins Lionel Messi and the reigning MLS Cup champions as a designated player, with a contract that runs through 2029, alongside a club option for an additional year. The transfer was secured by Inter Miami through the payment of Berterame’s $15 million release clause, according to sources reported by ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Berterame expressed his gratitude to Monterrey, stating, “I’m leaving with a clear conscience, knowing I always gave my all for this club, and I hope I can return further down the road.” He added that the opportunity to sign with Miami is a unique and unexpected experience, saying, “I think it’s going to be a beautiful experience.”

Reflecting on his decision, Berterame noted, “When I renewed my contract with Monterrey, I told [sporting director Héctor Lara], ‘I’m not leaving unless something really eye-catching comes along.’ I was obviously talking about teams from Europe. And I also said, ‘Unless, obviously, Messi comes and takes me with him.’ So that anecdote stuck.”

Born in Argentina and naturalized as a Mexican in 2024, Berterame began his professional career in the Argentine Primera División, playing for clubs such as San Lorenzo and Patronato before making his Liga MX debut with Atletico San Luis in 2019. During his tenure at Atletico San Luis, he scored an impressive 31 goals in 93 matches across all competitions and earned the Golden Boot for the 2021 Apertura tournament.

His success in Liga MX caught the attention of the Mexican national team, allowing him to represent El Tricolor after previously playing for the Argentina youth national team. Berterame recently scored the winning goal for Mexico in a World Cup warm-up friendly against Bolivia.

Despite interest from other MLS teams, including FC Cincinnati, who attempted to activate Berterame’s previous release clause, the transfer to Miami ultimately came to fruition.
