LONDON — Chelsea’s head coach, Liam Rosenior, is well aware of the memes circulating online comparing him to David Brent from the British version of “The Office.” Aware of the humor directed at him on social media, he admits that his children were the ones who first showed him the memes.

“They love it! There was one about my dress sense where they said I had decent style, and my daughter found that hilarious,” he shared during his pre-match news conference on Friday. “She hates my dress sense!”

Despite the lighthearted banter, Rosenior has fulfilled his commitment to securing victories for Chelsea, having achieved six wins in his first seven matches across all competitions since taking the helm earlier this month.

Chelsea’s latest triumph, a 3-2 victory over West Ham United, marked a historic moment as it was the first time in Premier League history that the club came back to win after trailing by two goals at halftime. Following a similar comeback against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, this victory has further solidified Chelsea’s resilience.

“I hope in time the fans will say it was the best decision this club has ever made, but I can’t focus on that right now,” Rosenior remarked regarding his appointment after the match.

The game itself illustrated a stark contrast in performance from Chelsea. They struggled significantly in the first half, prompting boos from the home crowd at Stamford Bridge. West Ham took advantage, scoring two goals courtesy of Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville.

Alejandro Garnacho lost possession on multiple occasions before being substituted at halftime, while Liam Delap appeared isolated and ineffective. The defensive pairing of Benoît Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah looked vulnerable, leaving Chelsea fortunate to be just two goals down at the break.

Rosenior was quick to make tactical adjustments, making three substitutions at halftime. “I’ve always made early changes in my managerial career,” he noted.

The substitutions proved fruitful, as defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana, along with striker João Pedro, contributed significantly to Chelsea’s comeback. Fofana’s cross set up Pedro for the first goal, followed by Cucurella’s diving header to equalize.

It was notable that this was the first time in over three years that two Chelsea substitutes scored in a single Premier League match.

Enzo Fernández completed the comeback by netting the winning goal in the second minute of added time, capitalizing on Pedro’s pass across the area.

Rosenior’s appointment was initially met with skepticism following the departure of Enzo Maresca, who had led Chelsea to a top-four finish and won multiple trophies. In contrast, Rosenior’s previous experience included an assistant role at Derby County and managing stints at Hull City and Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg.

However, his record since taking over at Stamford Bridge speaks for itself, with a five-game winning streak and the best start since Maurizio Sarri in 2018. “For a manager to step in midway through the season and secure six wins out of seven games is quite commendable,” he reflected.

While Rosenior has enjoyed a relatively favorable fixture list thus far, with his only loss against quality opposition in the Carabao Cup, he is poised for his biggest challenge yet: the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal against Arsenal, where Chelsea must overturn a 3-2 deficit.

“It’s a significant achievement for us to have won from two goals down at home in the Premier League for the first time,” Rosenior concluded. “Seeing the heart, mentality, and spirit of the team in the second half fills me with immense joy.”
