Werder Bremen Part Ways with Head Coach Horst SteffenWerder Bremen Part Ways with Head Coach Horst Steffen

Werder Bremen has officially announced the dismissal of head coach Horst Steffen following a 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

Steffen joined the Weserstadion in the summer from Elversberg. Despite an initial rough patch, there was a brief period of stabilization. However, the team has since struggled and has not secured a victory since November 7. Over the course of 21 games, Steffen’s tenure yielded an average of 0.9 points per game.

In a statement regarding the decision, managing director of football Clemens Fritz remarked, “It was a difficult decision, but we no longer believe that Horst will be able to turn things around with the team after this prolonged winless streak. This realization is undoubtedly challenging, especially as we hold Horst in high regard. However, it is the outcome of a thorough analysis of our sporting situation and recent discussions. Thus, we have decided to relieve Horst of his duties.”

In the interim, assistant coaches Raphael Duarte and Christian Groß will oversee team operations while the club conducts its search for a new head coach.

Potential candidates to replace Steffen include Marco Rose and Edin Terzic, though their hiring may present financial challenges. Other options such as Thorsten Fink, who previously managed Genk in Belgium, and Bo Svensson are also under consideration.
