Szoboszlai Expresses Commitment to Liverpool Amid Contract TalksSzoboszlai Expresses Commitment to Liverpool Amid Contract Talks

Dominik Szoboszlai addressed the press after Liverpool’s commanding 4-1 win against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday night. This victory marked the Reds’ return to winning form in the league for the first time in 2026. Despite the positive result, Liverpool remains in sixth position in the table, trailing behind Manchester United and Chelsea, both of whom also secured victories this weekend.

As the captain of Hungary, Szoboszlai has delivered an impressive performance this season, contributing eight goals and seven assists across all competitions. He has showcased his versatility by playing in various positions, including his natural role in central midfield, as well as right midfield and even right-back on occasion.

The former RB Leipzig talent expressed his desire to extend his stay at Anfield beyond his current contract, which is set to expire in 2028. However, he acknowledged that the decision regarding his future is not entirely within his control. Szoboszlai has attracted interest from prestigious clubs, including Real Madrid, and it is clear that numerous teams would vie for the 25-year-old’s signature should negotiations with Liverpool falter.

When asked about the status of contract extension discussions, Szoboszlai candidly remarked, “Nothing yet, to be honest. There is no progression, but if the right offer comes in, then we’ll see. I hope everyone will be happy in the end. Of course, I want to stay; I love the city, the club, my teammates, Anfield, and the fans. Let’s see what the future holds, but it is not in my hands. I would love to [stay]. We will see.”

Reflecting on his role as a right-back during Saturday’s match—necessitated by injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong—Szoboszlai clarified, “This is not a long-term or even medium-term role for me. As I have mentioned before, I am primarily a midfielder. Hopefully, our right-back will return from injury soon, allowing me to return to my preferred position. However, if the team or coach requires me to play elsewhere, I will strive to give my best. Now, Wata [Endo] and Curtis [Jones] are both prepared to fill that role, so we have several options.”

Szoboszlai further elaborated, “I am the type of player who believes there is always room for improvement. I aim to score as many goals and provide as many assists as possible while winning as many trophies as I can. That has always been my ambition and will continue to guide my career.”

This season, Szoboszlai has established himself as a standout player for Liverpool, becoming a regular starter under manager Arne Slot, alongside stalwarts like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. In his 33 appearances across all competitions, he has been substituted only twice, underscoring his significance to the squad.

The adaptable midfielder has emerged as one of the league’s finest and is a favorite of Slot, who has utilized him in various positions throughout his tenure at the club.

Slot praised Szoboszlai in November, stating that comparisons to Steven Gerrard represent “probably the best compliment he can receive.” He added, “Dom possesses numerous qualities, one of which is his exceptional work rate without the ball. His performance in that regard has consistently exceeded expectations, particularly in the last two matches against Aston Villa and Real Madrid.”

As Liverpool aims for a breakthrough in contract negotiations with Szoboszlai, their immediate focus will shift to an important clash against Manchester City at Anfield next weekend.
