The Bundesliga weekend concluded with Borussia Dortmund hosting bottom-placed Heidenheim. Following Hamburg’s surprising draw against Bayern Munich, Dortmund found renewed motivation, knowing a victory would reduce the deficit to the Bavarians to just six points. Conversely, Heidenheim was desperate for points, sitting four points adrift of Mainz, who occupy the relegation playoff spot.

Niko Kovač implemented five changes to the lineup that lost 2-0 to Inter Milan, with notable returns for Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt. Frank Schmidt also made five adjustments following his team’s 3-0 defeat to Leipzig.

The match started slowly, but Dortmund faced an early scare when Gregor Kobel was challenged in the air by Patrick Mainka while trying to claim a cross from Eren Dinkçi. Kobel failed to secure the ball cleanly, allowing Mainka to poke it home, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the buildup. Heidenheim soon had another opportunity, with Nico Schlotterbeck’s clearance falling to Dinkçi, whose shot was expertly saved by Kobel.

Dortmund regained control and nearly took the lead when Schlotterbeck, unmarked at a corner, sent his header just over the crossbar. Julian Brandt then provided a perfectly-timed through ball to Serhou Guirassy, who struck the crossbar with his chipped effort, narrowly missing the opening goal.

After dominating possession, Dortmund finally broke the deadlock from their eighth corner. Diant Ramaj misjudged the delivery under pressure from Guirassy, allowing Waldemar Anton to score the opener.

Heidenheim, however, responded fiercely just before halftime. Mathias Honsak capitalized on a defensive lapse following an injury to Filippo Mané, assisting Julian Niehues, who scored on his second attempt.

The second half commenced with a swift blow to Dortmund as Niehues netted his second goal, having been set up by Arijon Ibrahimović after a brilliant individual run. The shot was slightly deflected, leaving Kobel unable to react in time.

Despite Dortmund’s efforts to equalize, they were fortunate not to fall further behind when Marvin Pieringer missed a clear chance at the far post. The equalizer finally came when Niklas Dorsch handled a cross inside the box, allowing Guirassy to score from the penalty spot after Ramaj partially blocked his attempt.

Kovač’s side sensed an opportunity and quickly went on the attack. Maximilian Beier found Guirassy, who coolly slotted the ball beneath Ramaj to restore the lead.

Dortmund was awarded another penalty when Guirassy was fouled by Tim Siersleben. However, in a surprising miss, Guirassy’s attempt at a Panenka sailed well over the bar.

In the dying moments of the match, Heidenheim squandered two golden opportunities to equalize. Ibrahimović’s cross found Kaufmann at the near post, but he failed to hit the target, and another chance went begging shortly after.

After a gripping 98 minutes, Dortmund secured the victory, which allowed them to close the gap at the top of the table to six points. This defeat could deeply impact Heidenheim’s campaign, particularly given Pieringer’s missed opportunity, which might have led to a different outcome.
