Transfer Speculation Surrounding Tonali as January Window ClosesTransfer Speculation Surrounding Tonali as January Window Closes

omidbasir- The final day of the January transfer window saw speculation regarding Tonali’s agent reportedly offering the midfielder to Arsenal. The Gunners are in search of a replacement for Spain’s Mikel Merino, who is currently sidelined due to a fractured foot. Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the club’s intentions to add another player before the window closed, actively seeking viable solutions. However, it was later revealed that Newcastle has no interest in allowing the Italy international to depart from St James’s Park.

Tonali’s agent has since addressed the transfer rumors concerning the midfielder. Riso confirmed that Newcastle is not willing to permit Tonali’s exit in January but did not completely dismiss the possibility of a future transfer. He stated to Sky Sport Italia: “I read the reports, but Newcastle won’t let Sandro leave in January, and we have not had any discussions with Arsenal about this. We will evaluate in March whether Newcastle is open to any negotiations, but at this moment, he is competing in the Champions League, making it an inappropriate time to discuss it.”

This season, Tonali has mentioned that he is “not closing the door” on a potential return to Serie A, amidst interest from Juventus in bringing him back to Italy. The midfielder transferred to Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 and has become a crucial player for Eddie Howe’s team. Newcastle chose to stand by Tonali even after he received a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, extending his contract until 2029, with an option for an additional year until 2030.

However, the Magpies may find it challenging to retain Tonali this summer, as clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea are reportedly keen on acquiring the 25-year-old. The comments from Tonali’s agent hint at the possibility of him being lured away from St James’s Park, particularly if Newcastle fails to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as the team currently occupies 10th place in the league standings.

Currently, Tonali and Newcastle are preparing for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, aiming to defend the title they secured at Wembley last season. The Cityzens lead 2-0 from the first leg at St James’s Park but have struggled with form since then, recently surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Tottenham in the Premier League. The winner of this tie will face either Arsenal or Chelsea in the final.
