Al Hilal Signs Young Striker Mohamed Kader Meite from RennesAl Hilal Signs Young Striker Mohamed Kader Meite from Rennes

Mohamed Kader Meite has been the third-choice forward this season, following Esteban Lepaul and Breel Embolo.

As the transfer window approaches its conclusion, a noteworthy yet underreported move involves Al-Hilal’s acquisition of Rennes’ teenage striker, Mohamed Kader Meite.

The 18-year-old Frenchman has officially joined the Saudi Pro League club for a reported fee of €30 million (£25.9 million), positioning him as the second-highest signing outside the Premier League during this transfer period, surpassed only by Lucas Paqueta’s return to Flamengo from West Ham United.

Meite has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract with Al-Hilal, despite interest from several Premier League clubs after his impressive performances in Ligue 1.

“This is significant, especially since Manchester United was reportedly linked with him before Al-Hilal’s substantial offer secured the deal,” stated Paul MacDonald from Football Transfers in an interview with BBC Sport.

“It underscores Saudi Arabia’s determination to invest heavily in young talent this summer, with Meite’s signing marking the first major step.”

Born in France to Ivorian parents, Meite progressed through Rennes’ youth academy before making his first-team debut and signing his initial professional contract with the club in November 2024.

He made his senior debut shortly thereafter as a substitute in a 2-0 league loss to Toulouse. Since then, he has made 32 appearances, netting five goals and providing two assists.

Meite has also represented France at four different youth levels, showcasing his potential on the international stage.

“He is a remarkable talent,” commented French football expert Julien Laurens. “While it’s somewhat disappointing that he has moved to Saudi Arabia, the financial package was undoubtedly appealing for him.”

“I don’t expect him to stay there for long—he will likely find his way to the Premier League eventually. Some English clubs may be waiting to see how he performs in this new environment before making a move, but he possesses immense potential.”

Laurens further characterized Meite as a “modern number nine,” describing him as “strong, quick, hungry, and skilled on the ball.”

In addition to Meite’s departure, Rennes is also nearing another significant sale, as Liverpool has reportedly agreed to sign defender Jeremy Jacquet for £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, pending a medical examination. However, the 20-year-old will not join the Reds until the summer.
