Celta Vigo has officially announced the signing of 34-year-old Uruguayan international midfielder Matías Vecino on Monday night. Vecino joins the club from Lazio, where his contract was set to expire on June 30. He has signed a deal lasting until 2027.

Vecino boasts an extensive career, having played for notable clubs such as Central Español, Nacional, Fiorentina, Cagliari, Empoli, Inter, and Lazio. He has spent over thirteen years in Italy’s Serie A and has earned 69 caps for the Uruguayan national team.

This season, Vecino has seen limited playing time, accumulating 657 minutes across 14 appearances in both league and cup competitions. Celta Vigo aimed to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Fran Beltrán and Damián, leaving them with only Ilaix Moriba, Miguel Román, and Hugo Sotelo in that position.

His arrival, alongside Fer López, could see him make his debut this Friday against Osasuna at Balaídos. The club welcomed him with an official statement, noting, “Matías possesses the versatility to operate both as a central midfielder and a pivot. He is distinguished by his physical presence, recovery ability, and excellent ball distribution skills. His incorporation aligns perfectly with Claudio Giráldez’s playing style, thereby reinforcing the team for a critical phase of the season.”

Vecino will reunite with former teammates Marcos Alonso and Radu at Celta.
