Sevilla s January Transfer Window A Mixed OutcomeSevilla s January Transfer Window A Mixed Outcome

Sevilla concluded its January transfer window with results that fall short of the team’s needs. Antonio Cordón swiftly facilitated the departures of players deemed surplus to Matías Almeyda’s requirements, including Álvaro Fernández and Ramón Martínez, who moved to Deportivo de La Coruña and Valladolid, respectively.

Over several weeks, speculation surrounded various potential transfers. However, Cordón clarified prior to the match against Elche that the priority was to avoid devaluing the squad, indicating that new signings would be limited.

The long-term injury to Marcao and the loan of Alfon to Villarreal allowed Sevilla to finalize the arrival of Neil Maupay from Olympique de Marseille, a deal previously agreed upon for a loan with an option to buy for 5 million euros. “We needed to strengthen that position, and with him, we have an additional option in this two-striker system as a substitute for Isaac,” remarked José Ignacio Navarro, assistant to the sporting director, regarding the French forward.

In addition to Maupay, Federico Gattoni has also rejoined Sevilla this month after a lackluster loan spell at River Plate. With no offers for his departure, the Argentine will aim to fill the gap left by Marcao, although the defense is certainly weaker than at the start of the season. Cordón’s trip to Mallorca hinted that no last-minute movements were anticipated.

Ultimately, the club failed to secure a sale that would yield a capital gain of at least 10 million euros, which was essential for balancing finances before the upcoming June 30 deadline. Consequently, the exit of their top assets has been postponed for the time being.

In contrast to the first team, Sevilla Atlético made several signings as the transfer window drew to a close. Under the management of Luci Martín, the team, currently seventeenth in the Primera Federación, had already strengthened its roster with the addition of José Pedraza, a forward from Antoniano and nephew of Alfonso Pedraza. However, additional movements were still required. Moroccan striker Abde Rahiani has departed for the PAOK reserve team, while defenders Aston da Silva (from PSV Eindhoven) and Valentino Fattore (returning from Marbella) have joined the squad, with Fattore coming back after a two-and-a-half-year absence.
