Nico Williams Faces Recovery Challenges Amidst Pubalgia IssuesNico Williams Faces Recovery Challenges Amidst Pubalgia Issues

Nico Williams’ availability this season has been inconsistent due to significant pubalgia issues. This injury has hindered his ability to perform at his usual level, prompting both the player and the club to consult multiple specialists for recovery options. The timeline for Nico’s recovery remains uncertain, with neither he nor the club’s medical staff dismissing the possibility of surgery.

Mikel González, the Athletic Club’s director of football, commented on the situation, stating, “Currently, surgeries for pubalgia are not commonly performed due to the associated loss of speed and acceleration. Moreover, surgery does not guarantee a full recovery and could keep the player sidelined for three to six months.”

González emphasized that the club has sought insights from four specialists regarding Nico’s condition, with the option to explore further avenues still on the table. The primary objective for Nico is straightforward: to undergo treatment that prioritizes his availability while minimizing disruption to the team. He is currently undergoing one such treatment, with evaluations of subsequent steps underway. Should the current therapy prove ineffective, the younger Williams brother may need to take an indefinite break to focus on strengthening the affected area, although it would not extend to the duration typically associated with surgical intervention.

During a conversation last summer, González shared that Nico expressed his commitment to the Athletic Club, stating, “The priority is the Athletic and the club above all else, including the World Cup.” He also noted that Nico’s injury has been a recurring issue since the previous season. “He returned from summer training in good shape, but in September, he suffered an adductor injury while with the national team. Since then, he has been playing with pain and limitations, doing everything possible to remain with the team. We need to show understanding and empathy, as he is putting his health at risk.”
