Liverpool FC has announced the acquisition of defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes, with the player set to join the club in the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to sources, the transfer fee is valued at £55 million ($74 million), with an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. The 20-year-old is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Liverpool’s defensive reconstruction.

Jacquet has committed to a contract at Anfield that runs until 2031, with an option for an additional year.

While Chelsea initially reached an agreement for Jacquet, complications arose surrounding personal issues. This situation shifted when Chelsea opted to recall center-back Mamadou Sarr from his loan at Strasbourg and declined offers for Josh Acheampong, as reported by sources.

Liverpool’s interest in Jacquet has been longstanding, but discussions intensified over the weekend after it became evident that the player was eager to join the Anfield side.

The signing of Jacquet is consistent with Liverpool’s strategy of investing in elite young talent; the average age of their signings over the past two transfer windows has been under 22.

The club is in urgent need of defensive reinforcements, given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson, both of whom are out of contract this summer. Last summer, Liverpool attempted to secure Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace for £35 million ($47.8 million), but the deal fell through on transfer deadline day.

Guéhi, an England international, has since joined rivals Manchester City earlier this month.

Chelsea had also shown interest in Guéhi; however, sources indicate that he prefers a transfer to Liverpool, with personal terms likely not posing an issue.
