Martin Odegaard was likely set to start in the match at the Emirates Stadium, having been a key factor in Saturday’s convincing victory over Leeds United, where he came off the bench to make a significant impact, including an assist. However, his name was missing from the lineup for Tuesday night’s second leg, prompting head coach Mikel Arteta to address his absence.

In a pre-match interview, Arteta explained, “During the Leeds United game, he felt a slight niggle. We assessed him yesterday, but he wasn’t comfortable, so we hope he will be available for the weekend.”

Odegaard’s absence adds to the concerns for Arsenal, as fellow important player Bukayo Saka is also sidelined due to injury. Saka had to withdraw from the lineup for the match against Leeds and is expected to be out for approximately three weeks, which means he will miss the cup clash against Chelsea, as well as Premier League fixtures against Sunderland and Brentford, and an FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic. He aims to return in time for the north London derby against Tottenham on February 22.

Arteta provided an update on Saka’s condition: “He’s okay; we need to conduct further tests tomorrow to fully understand his situation. This game was too early for him, but we hope it’s not a lengthy absence.”

As Arsenal strives to advance in the competition, they continue to compete on four fronts as the season approaches its climax. The team is well-equipped with depth in the wing and attacking midfield positions, with players like Noni Madueke and Eze stepping up against Chelsea, proving capable of filling significant roles. It remains to be seen if Odegaard will be fit and available for the weekend’s clash with Sunderland.
