James Rodríguez is currently a free agent after parting ways with Club León in Liga MX and has been without a club since December. Should a deal come to fruition, the 34-year-old would instantly become the most prominent global name to don a Minnesota United jersey.

Despite his recent absence from club action, Rodríguez remains a pivotal player for the Colombian national team as the country gears up for the 2026 World Cup. He received significant acclaim for his performances during the 2024 Copa América, held in the United States, where he was widely acknowledged as the tournament’s standout player and played a crucial role in leading Colombia to the final against Argentina.

Rodríguez last appeared in a competitive match in November 2025, when he represented Colombia. His most recent club tenure was with León, where he scored five goals and provided nine assists in 34 appearances across two Liga MX tournaments. While León reached the playoffs during his first season, the second ended with the team near the bottom of the table, rendering his overall experience in Mexico a mixed and ultimately disappointing one.

Since departing Real Madrid in 2020, Rodríguez’s career has taken him through multiple leagues and continents, with stints at Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, and León. With the MLS season approaching and the World Cup on the horizon, Minnesota United could provide the Colombian playmaker with a new platform, and the league could secure one of its most significant signings in recent times.
