Ligue 1 club Lens has released a statement supporting their new signing, Allan Saint-Maximin, after racist comments surfaced on social media following his announcement.

Saint-Maximin joined Lens on transfer deadline day as a free agent, having left Club America in Mexico, where he alleged that racist remarks were directed towards his daughters.

The 28-year-old forward had previously signed with Club America just last summer, making 16 appearances in Liga MX and scoring three goals. This marks his return to Ligue 1 for the first time since departing Nice in 2019 to join Newcastle.

In their statement, Lens condemned the hateful comments made on their social media platforms and announced the closure of the comments section for the announcement video, which featured a nod to the iconic Looney Tunes character, Roadrunner. The club stated: “Racing Club de Lens is outraged and strongly condemns the wave of hateful comments and racist insults directed at its new player, Allan Saint-Maximin, on social media.

“In response, the club has been compelled to close the comments section on certain posts and will continue to implement all necessary measures to ensure our social media channels remain healthy and respectful spaces for expression. As a socially responsible and committed club, we reaffirm our dedication to the values of respect and tolerance, standing united with Allan and his family, to whom we extend our full support.”

Saint-Maximin himself addressed the situation on Instagram a day before joining Lens, denouncing those who targeted his daughters. He stated: “The problem is not skin color; it is the color of thoughts. People may attack me, but that does not concern me.

“I was raised to defend myself against all forms of attack, whether they are subtle, hidden, or direct. However, one thing I will never accept is anyone attacking my children. Protecting my children is my top priority, and I will fight relentlessly to ensure they are respected and loved, irrespective of their origins or skin color.

“To those who dared to attack my children, I say this: you have made a grave mistake. I will always stand up to protect my family, and no individual or threat will ever intimidate me.”
