Newell’s Old Boys are actively pursuing a project aimed at enticing Lionel Messi to return to the club in the first half of 2027.

This initiative was confirmed by the club’s first vice president, Juan Manuel Medina, who stated, “It’s a project that goes beyond Newell’s. It encompasses the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football as a whole.”

Messi, who developed his early career with Newell’s youth teams before moving to Barcelona at the age of 13, extended his contract with Inter Miami in October 2023, committing to the club until the conclusion of the 2028 season.

The concept of viewing Messi as a long-term strategic objective began to take shape in 2024. Newell’s plans to create a comprehensive framework that integrates political, social, and sporting dimensions to persuade Messi to return, aiming for an impact that transcends just the game.

This plan includes enhancing the club’s infrastructure, fostering a competitive sporting environment, and establishing institutional conditions that befit a global sports icon.

Reports suggest that informal discussions have already commenced with Messi’s inner circle, although no concrete progress or definitive decisions have been reached as of yet.

Messi, now 38, joined Inter Miami in July 2023 and quickly became a pivotal figure for the team. He has led Miami to its first-ever trophies, including the Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters’ Shield in 2024, and the MLS Cup last season.

As Messi is expected to captain Argentina at the upcoming World Cup this summer, he has not indicated when he plans to retire from professional football. Newell’s believes that a return to the club would provide the perfect conclusion to the career of the 2022 World Cup champion.
