MEXICO CITY — Aaliyah Farmer, an American-born soccer player, has requested her release from UANL Tigres in Mexico’s premier women’s soccer league after just one year, citing harassment as the reason. Coach Pedro Losa confirmed this at a press conference on Wednesday.

Losa did not disclose specific details regarding the nature of the harassment Farmer endured. The 22-year-old, originally from California and of Mexican descent, has also represented Mexico on the national team. Earlier this week, she was officially released from Tigres and subsequently signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League.

“There was a clear boundary for her. She did not feel safe due to the harassment that occurred, and she communicated this to us,” Losa stated. “As a club, our responsibility was to support her.”

Farmer is not alone in her experience; she joins a growing list of American-born players who have departed Liga MX Femenil citing similar harassment issues. In October 2024, Lucia Yáñez left Puebla and returned to Los Angeles, her birthplace, after facing harassment and even having rocks thrown at her home during matches. Yáñez now plays for FAS in El Salvador.

Scarlett Camberos also left Mexico in 2023, signing with Angel City FC in Los Angeles after enduring online harassment for over a year. She eventually returned to the Mexican league to play for Club America.

Reports of harassment are not exclusive to American players; non-American women in the league have also come forward with similar claims.

“I want to raise awareness. Every day, female players and women in society experience this, both on social media and in various contexts,” Losa emphasized. “No woman should feel intimidated, abused, or harassed.”

Farmer had a notable collegiate career at Southern California, culminating in a Big Ten title in 2024. She began her professional journey with Tigres in 2025, participating in 24 matches—20 of which were as a starter—and secured the Apertura tournament championship in December. She made her debut with the Mexican national team in May 2025 and has since played eight matches.
