Cristian Roldan s Journey Resilience and Redemption in the USMNTCristian Roldan s Journey Resilience and Redemption in the USMNT

Cristian Roldan faced a challenging journey regarding his place in the US Men’s National Team (USMNT). Despite his reluctance to acknowledge it, the reality of losing his position became more apparent after a disappointing Gold Cup match against Panama on July 12, 2023. Over the past year, hope seemed to fade, particularly with the arrival of coach Mauricio Pochettino, as the USMNT appeared to move beyond Roldan. Nevertheless, he held on to the belief that he still had something valuable to contribute.

“I always had a glimmer of hope that I’d be back someday,” Roldan reflected. “There was a part of me that insisted I still had a chance, but with every missed call-up, that hope was diminishing. It had been around 700 days since my last call-up, a period of reflection and appreciation for what I had lost.

“I longed for that moment again. If I got the call, I promised I wouldn’t take it for granted.”

The call came in the fall of 2025. After an impressive season in Major League Soccer, Roldan was summoned to the USMNT’s September camp as a late replacement, arriving just two days before a match against South Korea. Despite the short preparation time, he made an impact in the 62nd minute and played the full match against Japan three days later, solidifying his return among his long-time teammates.

“My motivation to rejoin the team was always strong,” Roldan stated. “I didn’t lose hope, and being called up again felt like a dream come true after such a long absence.”

Pochettino quickly recognized Roldan’s significance, both on and off the pitch. Following the USMNT’s victory over Australia in October, where Roldan delivered two assists, the coach expressed his appreciation for the midfielder.

“He is exactly what we need,” Pochettino remarked post-match. “We require players who possess confidence, self-belief, competitiveness, and a bit of edge. Cristian Roldan embodies the qualities of an ideal player—he offers a bit of everything.”

Roldan’s performance and Pochettino’s endorsement served as a significant boost. The praise from a coach experienced with global stars like Lionel Messi and Neymar validated Roldan’s efforts and reignited his aspirations.

“Hearing that from a national team coach means a lot to me,” he said. “It shows that despite long gaps in call-ups, one can still make an impact. I approach every situation competitively, and I hope that Pochettino appreciates that. It seems he does.”

His teammates echo similar sentiments. Roldan is viewed as a vital presence within the team, offering guidance and support to both veterans and newcomers alike. Brenden Aaronson, a fellow player, noted the brotherly rapport Roldan fosters in camp.

“He’s like a big brother; someone you look up to who has accomplished great things. It’s refreshing to see him back, and he has many relationships within the team,” Aaronson shared.

Roldan’s influence has not gone unnoticed, even by former coaches like Gregg Berhalter, who highlighted Roldan’s pivotal role during the 2022 World Cup. While not the team’s official leader, he is often called upon by leaders for support, a role he embraces wholeheartedly.

However, Roldan is eager to be recognized for his contributions on the field as well. He exhibited his skills impressively against Japan and Australia, assisting both of Haji Wright’s goals in their 2-1 victory. Roldan’s determination underscores that he is not just a mentor but a capable midfielder ready to contribute to the team.

“My goal was to make a tangible impact on the field during those camps,” he explained. “While I make my mark off the field, it’s crucial to perform during the matches as well. I was thrilled to be part of the wins and hope to create more memorable moments.”

With significant matches on the horizon, Roldan is hopeful for the opportunity to contribute. His time at the 2022 World Cup remains a cherished memory, filled with moments of anticipation and pride, and he is eager to relive that experience this summer.

As the World Cup approaches, Roldan reflects on the swift changes in soccer. “Just a few months ago, I didn’t think I’d be part of the squad. Soccer can change rapidly, and one must be ready for whatever comes, whether it’s favorable or not.”

If fortune favors him, Roldan dreams of celebrating a second World Cup appearance. He envisions hugging his daughter, who will turn two this summer, knowing that one day she will understand the significance of his achievements. His hope remains unwavering, motivating him through this transformative journey.
