Santos coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda has expressed encouragement regarding Neymar’s recovery following his knee surgery in December, though he is cautious about rushing the player back into action.

Neymar, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Thursday, returned to training this week after being sidelined since December 22, when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a damaged meniscus.

In light of speculation that Neymar might make an appearance on Sunday against Club Noroeste in the Campeonato Paulista, Vojvoda remarked, “He is back with the group. However, a player of his caliber, who is preparing for significant goals, needs to be in optimal shape before making his return.”

He further noted, “Neymar is fully committed to ensuring that when he steps onto the field again, he can deliver the performance that everyone anticipates. He has aspirations for the World Cup, which necessitates thorough training and competitive practice. We will not rush his return. I, along with his teammates, need him, but above all, we want him to be fully fit.”

Vojvoda added, “When he is in good health, he makes a remarkable difference on the pitch like no other player can.”

As Neymar approaches the age of 34, the urgency surrounding his World Cup aspirations grows. He played a pivotal role in helping Santos avoid relegation last season and is now aiming for a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Injuries have kept Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals, from representing his country since October 2023.

Gabriel Barbosa, known as ‘Gabigol’, who joined Santos on loan from Cruzeiro last month, aims to alleviate some of the pressure on Neymar.

“I don’t see him as the savior of the nation,” Gabigol stated. “If that were the case, other teams would never lose, as they have outstanding players too. He’s an important player—an idol in our group and a captain, with remarkable leadership qualities. We hope to support him so that he doesn’t feel overwhelmed and can enjoy his game. We look forward to his full recovery, without pressure, so he can contribute to both Santos and the national team.”
