Tensions have escalated within the Tottenham Hotspur camp following Cristian Romero’s incendiary post on social media, in which he described the club’s injury-depleted squad depth as “disgraceful.”

Shortly before the January transfer window closed, the Argentine international shared on Instagram that he had played through an illness during the recent 2-2 draw against Manchester City, expressing frustration that the team had “only 11 players available.” This statement has been widely interpreted as a pointed criticism of the club’s management for not strengthening the squad, particularly following the mid-month signing of Conor Gallagher.

Ahead of the upcoming match against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Manager Frank addressed the situation, noting that it had been “dealt with internally.” While he refrained from disclosing whether Romero faced any disciplinary action, he affirmed that the defender would retain his captaincy. “I wouldn’t have done it. That is my message,” he commented, regarding Romero’s public remarks, while recognizing that only Romero could clarify his true intent.

In a moment of reflection during the pre-match press conference, Frank sought to put Romero’s actions into context by drawing parallels with his own experiences. The 52-year-old manager emphasized that leadership is a continuous journey and that mistakes can occur at any age.

“Leadership encompasses many facets,” he stated. “I’m 52 years old and confident in my leadership abilities. Can I improve daily? Absolutely. Do I make mistakes? Perhaps not every day, but likely weekly. Romero, at 27, will continue to learn and grow as a leader, and he certainly commits many positive acts.”

Romero’s post resonated with frustrated fans and even received “likes” from several teammates, prompting speculation about potential discord within the squad. However, Frank quickly dismissed concerns regarding the implications of social media interactions, suggesting that such actions may simply reflect support for the team’s performance rather than complicity in the criticism.

“Cuti is a passionate player who strives to give his all on the pitch. His ambition fuels his desire to win every time,” he remarked. “Occasionally, this passion can lead to outbursts, as was the case here. We have addressed the matter internally.”

Despite the recent upheaval, Tottenham has received a substantial fitness boost ahead of their clash with Michael Carrick’s revitalized United. Frank confirmed that Romero has recovered from the illness that sidelined him at half-time against City and is expected to start. More significantly, Micky van de Ven, who has trained all week, is available for selection after missing the last two matches due to injury.

Djed Spence remains a “touch and go” option but could make the bench, while two-goal hero Dominic Solanke is anticipated to overcome an ankle issue. With Spurs currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table, just nine points above the relegation zone, Frank is keen to build on their recent unbeaten streak. Although he acknowledged potential frustration among fans regarding the lack of January signings, he reiterated the club’s commitment to being “very ambitious” and focused on making long-term, strategic decisions.
