Matías Almeyda held a press conference to discuss the upcoming match against Girona, highlighting the recovery of players Azpilicueta, Gudelj, and Nianzou. He described Girona as a well-organized team with talented players that poses a significant challenge, particularly for Sevilla, who are under considerable pressure. Almeyda noted that every match feels like a final for his team, especially given the current state of the tournament and their recent performance.

When questioned about his future, Almeyda reflected, “If I were to stop and think about whether I am being questioned, it would show weakness. I am a fighter and will remain until I am told otherwise. If I am no longer useful to Sevilla, I wouldn’t demand anything; my focus is elsewhere. My priority is to ensure this team survives in the league, and I am fully committed to that goal. If they decide to bring in someone new, I will not complain or cause any harm, either emotionally or practically. I am a nomad by nature and am here to fulfill my contract.”

He further expressed his desire to see Sevilla in a better position, wishing for a time when he could celebrate the team’s scoring rather than addressing errors. “It’s a tough moment, but I respect the situation. My focus remains on each moment, living with responsibility and a strong desire to succeed. If we finish this season positively, I will be the happiest person in the world.”

On the subject of player management, Almeyda discussed Oso’s performance, emphasizing that he had placed Oso in the first division and acknowledged his potential. However, he chose to bring Gabi back into the lineup based on experience and tactical considerations, stating, “I consult with him and know he is ready to play, but decisions must be made, and they are not always right. The right decisions are those that lead to victories.”

Regarding fan protests after their match against Mallorca, he affirmed the importance of free expression, whether positive or negative. “I support freedom of expression as long as it is genuine, as we all share the same goal of saving Sevilla. The club is divided, but I remain focused on unity to secure victories. I understand the discontent, and after a loss, no one will praise us; we must endure. It’s part of football, and protests are within everyone’s rights.”

Almeyda acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, stating, “We have conceded too many goals and have been working to adjust our systems and strategies. Some goals conceded were due to lapses in concentration rather than tactical failures. We must remain calm; goals from the flanks shouldn’t happen. I am open to discussions and corrections as we analyze each goal conceded.”

He mentioned Carmona’s performance in the match against Mallorca, noting that while he was passionate and gave his all, calmness is essential in football. “He can play in multiple positions and has performed well before. We have all made mistakes, including myself, and we are focused on maintaining our league status while improving our goal-scoring. If we become anxious, nothing will work. We are aware of our errors, but it’s important not to dwell on them excessively.”

Addressing the transfer market, Almeyda noted the club’s financial situation and the need for goal-scoring options. “We understand our economic constraints and the need for reinforcements; last season, we had Lukebakio and others. We aim to add depth to our squad, particularly in attack, as other teams typically have several forwards. Trust is crucial, and we need to support our current players, especially after a significant defeat.”

Lastly, he discussed new signing Maupay, stating, “We brought him in to score goals and contribute in various ways. In the short time we’ve worked together, his impressive goal was notable, though it didn’t lead to a win. He showed good movement but will take time to fully adapt to our system.”
