Struggles Continue for 1. FC Heidenheim in BundesligaStruggles Continue for 1. FC Heidenheim in Bundesliga

The hopes for survival are dwindling for 1. FC Heidenheim, the Bundesliga’s bottom-placed team. Following a loss to Hamburger SV on Saturday, Frank Schmidt’s side has now gone winless in their last eight matches.

In the current season, Heidenheim has yet to secure a victory in 2026, managing to score a league-low 19 goals while conceding a league-high 47. With 21 of the 34 rounds of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season completed, the team finds itself six points away from the promotion-relegation playoff position.

Many observers believe that Coach Schmidt’s side was unfortunate in their previous away match against title contenders Borussia Dortmund, despite ultimately losing 0-2. In the aftermath of the match, Schmidt struggled to articulate why his team delivered such a lackluster performance at home.

“For a time, it was an evenly matched game, but we ultimately lost 0-2,” Schmidt stated at the start of his post-match comments. “That scoreline encapsulates the game perfectly.”

When asked about the points required for safety, Schmidt clarified, “We don’t need six points; we need seven because making up the goal difference is not feasible.”

He continued, “We’ve only won three matches out of 21 matchdays. HSV hasn’t won an away game all season, yet they managed to win against us. That’s a sobering realization.”

Describing the current situation, Schmidt remarked, “It’s a dire predicament and a disappointing loss. For extended periods, our performance was subpar. All I can promise is that we will continue to give our utmost effort.”

In response to further inquiries from reporters about the team’s ongoing struggles, Schmidt reiterated, “We are at the bottom of the table. The fact that we are making more mistakes than we are correcting is indicative of a last-placed team.”

He added, “We are committing too many errors from the back, losing vital duels, and failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Every attacker has had ample chances to score, yet none have converted. This is not an exaggeration; it is the reality of our situation.”
