In November 2021, Newcastle United appointed Eddie Howe as head coach.

Following a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Brentford at St James’ Park, Howe expressed his willingness to step aside if he felt he was no longer the right person to lead the club. The loss left the team in 12th place in the Premier League, prompting boos from the supporters.

Howe, visibly disheartened, acknowledged that he was “not doing my job well enough at the moment.” However, just two days later, he reaffirmed his belief in his capability as head coach ahead of the upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur. “There’s no doubt in my mind that I am the right person for the job,” he stated. “If there were any doubt, I wouldn’t be here, as the club’s well-being is paramount. I have always prioritized the club over myself. If I believed I couldn’t provide what the players need, I would step aside for someone else to take over.”

Despite winning only once in their last eight games across all competitions, Howe continues to have the support of the club’s hierarchy. Since his appointment, he has had a transformative impact, leading Newcastle to victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final and securing two Champions League qualifications.

The team is favored to advance to the last 16 of the Champions League against Azerbaijani side Qarabag and faces Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Howe acknowledged that he is currently experiencing one of the toughest periods of his tenure but is relying on past challenges to navigate this difficult time. “The experiences I’ve encountered countless times before prepare me well for this moment,” he remarked.

“We seek a collective spirit and fight from all players, as having that resolve within the group can lead to remarkable achievements. The momentum may be against us now, but we must shift it back, and within a couple of games, the landscape can change significantly.”
