The hopes for survival are dwindling for 1. FC Heidenheim, currently at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. A recent defeat to Hamburger SV left Frank Schmidt’s team without a victory in their last eight matches.

Heidenheim has yet to register a win in 2026, managing only 19 goals—the lowest in the league—while conceding 47 goals, the highest. With 21 out of the 34 rounds of the Bundesliga season completed, Heidenheim finds themselves six points away from the promotion-relegation playoff spot.

In a prior match against title contenders Borussia Dortmund, many observers felt Heidenheim was unfortunate to lose. Head Coach Schmidt expressed frustration at the lackluster performance in the home fixture, stating, “For a time, it was an evenly matched game, but we ultimately lost 0-2. That [the scoreline] just about sums it up.”

When asked about the points needed for safety, Schmidt clarified, “We don’t need six points; we need seven, because we’re not going to make up the goal difference.”

Reflecting on the ongoing season, Schmidt noted, “We’ve only won three matches through 21 matchdays. HSV hasn’t won an away game all season and they won against us. That’s sobering.”

He added, “It’s a difficult situation and a disappointing loss. For long stretches, we didn’t deliver a good performance. I can only say that we will continue to give it our all.”

Addressing further inquiries about the team’s ongoing struggles, Schmidt remarked, “We’re last in the table. The fact that we’re doing more wrong than right reflects our position. We’re making too many mistakes from the back, losing crucial duels, and failing to convert scoring opportunities. Every single attacker has had chances to score but hasn’t been able to finish. I’m not fabricating this; it’s simply the reality.”
